The 15th Annual General Meeting of The Spice Council was held on 27th September 2019 at the Nelum Function Hall – Waters Edge. The event was attended by members of the council and representatives from both the Private and the Public Sector.
Dr. Heenkende, The Director General – Department of Export Agriculture graced this occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. Heenkende addressed the gathering and spoke about the industry needs and developments. He also enlightened the stakeholders on the efforts taken by the DEA for the industry and their future plans for the development of the industry.
The Chairman – Mr D A Perera, delivered his speech to the gathering, stating the activities and developments of the Council. He also addressed the issues of the industry and spoke about the efforts taken by all stakeholders to achieve the Industry vision and mission.
Mr Jairo Diaz – International Technical Specialist, UNIDO delivered a presentation on the joint work performed by the industry and UNIDO to obtain the Geographical Indication for Ceylon Cinnamon. He also outlined the importance and benefits of obtaining such Geographical Indications. Speaking at this event, Mr. Jairo thanked all the stakeholders who actively involved in obtaining the Geographical Indications.
The invention of a Cinnamon rubbing machine by Mr Wijitha Jayathilake was showcased at the Annual General Meeting. The techniques and advantages of the machine was enlightened to the gathering
The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Mr T P L Raj. Mr Raj thanked all present and spoke about the great efforts taken by all key members of the Council to bring the Council to the stage it is now.
